5 Sand Filtration Steps for Pool Maintenance

!±8± 5 Sand Filtration Steps for Pool Maintenance

Sand filters could be among the most primitive forms of filtering water. Sand has the ability to remove the impurities from the water. It is more of a natural method. Sand filter is a method used for pool maintenance. The goal of pool maintenance is to remove all the waste substances from the water and leave behind a clear pool of water.

Sand filters constitute large tanks. These tanks could be made of fiber glass, concrete or even metal. Inside the tank there is a chunky bed of sand. This sand is of a special grade. If you are inquisitive to know how this mechanism works, here is the process.

When a pool has dirty water in it, this dirty water flows into the pipe which leads the dirty water to the water distribution head. This water distribution head is placed inside the tank. The tank has sand of different textures. When the water falls into the tank, the gravity pulls the water down. The sand grabs in all the debris, dirt and impurities. The water is being treated by removing the debris in it and it is let out to the pool by the outlet pipe. In case you want it chlorinated, it could be sent to the unit where chlorine is added to the water making it viable for usage.

Over a period of time you would find that the dirt accumulation in the sand increases and the water is not getting filtered. This raises the need to change the sand in the tank. To ease this process, here are a few steps that you could follow:

• The first procedure is to remove the old sand and replace it by the new one. For this you have to open up the filtration unit. This might be a bit complicated. You have to deal with a lot of pipes, the quality of sand, the right texture and other major stuff. It would be quite difficult for you to get it done by yourself. If you have a plumber, he could do it for you. Or in case you do not know any such person, then call in for professionals.

• The next step is to dig out the sand. You cannot do this by a shovel since all the parts around the filter are pretty fragile. You could probably use a plastic cup which would certainly not do much damage.

• Once you remove all the sand, you have to clean the tank and examine all the plumbing connections in detail.

• Once all the laterals are examined and the tank is thoroughly cleaned, you can replace the sand. Once you fill in the sand, fill half the tank with water. This will help set the sand perfectly leaving no gaps in between.

• Once all this is done you need to run the water in back wash mode so that it flushes out all the dust from the sand and allow the sand to fully settle down the bottom of the tank.

Sand filters are available almost everywhere. The installation of these filters is easy and cheap. You need to just concentrate on the plumbing work because a little amount of error there may cause a huge damage. If you are going green then this option may be an ideal one for you.

Portable Pool Vacuums and Important Maintenance Jobs

!±8± Portable Pool Vacuums and Important Maintenance Jobs

A portable pool vacuum is probably one of the most valuable pieces of swimming pool equipment when it comes to keeping a pool in tiptop shape. For this reason, you should go down the quality route to ensure your pool water quality, and select a good quality model which is well rated in the reviews. These are definitely not commodity items that can be assumed to be of largely equal quality of construction and efficiency in use. A high level of skill is needed in the design and development of these devices, and you will only get that from the top of the range manufacturers who have been in the business long enough to produce the very best products.

A portable pool vacuum system consists of a number of parts that fit together to make the system fully functional. The vacuum head is that part of the portable pool vacuum system that is similar to a vacuum cleaner. Some pool packages come with a maintenance kit that includes a portable pool vacuum, and if so do your homework to make sure that the model is a good one, or maybe negotiate a price reduction and by a better model yourself.

Static system filters are not well suited for the removal from water of larger things such as leaves, flower petals, pine needles and the like. Therefore, it is now common to equip swimming pools with skimmers for the removal from water entering the return flow duct to the pump of leaves and the like, which things often float on the surface of the pool. Systems that are highly automated are available and these will suit those who have the least time to do pool maintenance for their bathers.

Make sure that you clean out the skimmer basket, the hair and lint basket in the pump, and backwash or regenerate the filter if necessary on a regular basis - that is rarely automated!.

A lot of people forget this one. Always store your pool maintenance equipment, especially the vacuum hose, out of the sun. Clean the filter, as needed. A leak in the suction line(s) can cause foaming, so watch out for that.

Filters need changing at their due time. They usually have a pressure gauge to tell you when they've absorbed too much particulate. For instance, on the Hayward 4800 DE filter, when the pressure rises to 10 PSI more than the pressure when the filter powder was changed, water flow is being unduly restricted and it's time to change your powder again. Filter and pump cleaning is also important since much of the debris that enters a pool gets collects in these areas.

Tile cleaning is often neglected as well. Don't forget that this may be needed to maintain the appearance of the pool.

Vacuum hoses should be inspected regularly and replaced when worn. Most are flexible hoses that are utilized in a variety of devices that are designed to remove dirt and debris from a given area.

While the vacuum cleaners used in many homes and offices are considered the most common appliances to use a vacuum hose, the accessory is also an integral part of equipment used to clean pools, upholstery and manufacturing floors.

So, to round off this article let us say that vacuuming, brushing, and checking the pool's strainer baskets are all tasks that should be completed every week, but don't forget the other tasks mentioned here. They may need doing less often than weekly, but are easily forgotten and no less important.

!±8± The Best Above Ground Pools - Choosing the Right One

There are a variety of swimming pools you can choose from and if you are interested in finding an inexpensive solution to the summer heat, read on to find out how to choose the best above ground pools. Above ground pools are regular swimming pools with a difference, they are not built into the ground but as the name suggests they rest on the ground.

The concept of above ground pools is here to stay. Many people are finding it to be a cheaper solution to owning a pool. You don't have to invest heavily in constructing a pool and it is especially beneficial to people who rent rather than own their home. The best above ground pools are made from steel, aluminum, or resin, and are available in a wide range of sizes, designs and depths.

All the best ones will allow you to choose from hard sided or soft sided pools and inflatable or portable pools. While the hard sided pools will require minimum ground preparation to bear the weight of the pool and install it firmly, the soft sided pools can be set up on grass, gravel, sand or concrete.

You should measure your yard before you choosing from the best ones. The size of the pool will depend on the space available in your yard. The best ones come with decking options that allow you to sunbathe if you want to and enhance the look of your poolside area.

Whenever we are faced with too wide a range of choices or have to decide on something we are not too knowledgeable about, the easiest way to overcome the problem is to do some research. This is recommended to help you find the best above ground pools. Go online and find sites that discuss the various brands and models of the best ones available.

We have to remember that above ground pools are not long tiny plastic tubs that spring a leak by the time you get it home from the store. Today the best above ground pools use extremely durable and fashionable materials that include vinyl liner laid over supporting frames of steel, resin, aluminum or wood. The smallest sized pool is about 15-18 feet and the larger ones are 18x36 feet, large enough for you to swim laps in.

Enjoying your selection of swimming pool from the best above ground pools will depend on the quality of the equipment you buy to keep it functioning smoothly and efficiently. Some of the things you need to buy will include a pump, filtration system and chemical dispensers to keep the water fresh and clean. You can buy other accessories to enhance your pool like lighting and slides, etc. There are some handy tools you can buy for removing debris like a net or skimmer, a pool cover to prevent debris from falling into the pool, thermometer to check water temperature and so much more.

Finding the best above ground pools is not difficult with some diligent searching, patience and effort. Always be knowledgeable about the purchase you plan to make, this way you can make an informed decision.

What You Should Know About Swimming Pool Drains and Entrapment

!±8± What You Should Know About Swimming Pool Drains and Entrapment

Swimming pool drains have received a lot of attention lately; with warmer weather and the opening of public pools approaching. The talk concerns the new federal standards enacted with the passing of "The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act" , which became effective on December 19, 2008. The major changes resulting from the act are the requirement of barriers to prevent access to small children and that the swimming pool drains on all public pools be equipped with anti-entrapment devices or systems. Though the law applies only to public pools; it is highly recommended that the same protective measures be taken with residential pools and spas. For those who may be unfamiliar with the dangers of entrapment and the preventative methods; we've provided answers to some commonly asked questions.

What Is Entrapment?
Answer: Entrapment involves someone being held against a pool or spa drain by vacuum pressure from the pool pump. Pool water is circulated by being pulled through the main drain, pushed through the filter, and back to the pool through return lines. Many older pools and spas were built or made with only one drain. When these single drains are cover by parts of the body or if a persons hair or limbs are somehow inserted into the drain; a powerful suction, or vortex is created. The suction can be strong enough to prevent a child, or an adult, from freeing themselves. There have also been instances where sitting on the drain and having their intestines sucked out by the pressure have disemboweled children.

What measures can be taken to prevent entrapment?
Answer: The first step of prevention is to have the main drains split with dual anti-vortex drain covers and at least 36 inches from center of sump to center of sump.
The law now makes it a crime to sell or install pools or spas that are not equipped with dual main drains and anti-entrapment drain covers. In addition, all public pools, regardless of age, must meet those same requirements or have other anti-entrapment systems or devices installed.

What Are the Options for Pools With Only One Drain?
Answer: There are several compliance options for older pools with single drains.
Cut out the bottom of the pool and re-plumb the line to install split drains with at 36 inches from center of sump to center of sump Install a gravity drain system Install a suction limiting vent system Install an automatic pump shutoff Disable the main drain
What is the best option for my pool?
Answer: Re-plumbing the main drains or installing a gravity drain are viable options, but the high cost of either of these repairs make them much less practical for residential pools than the other systems. Disabling the drain, while not as costly, would greatly reduce the rate of circulation, unless changes are made to the pump and filter system. This leaves us with two feasible and reasonably priced options.
Suction Limiting Vent System (SVRS)-This system involves the installation of an atmospheric vent on the suction side of the pump, which opens and introduces air into the suction lines when there is a sudden increase in vacuum pressure. There are several manufacturers of these systems including Vac-Alert and Hayward, with prices ranging from 0 to 0. Automatic Pump Shutoff-This is an electrical device that monitors the system and automatically shuts off power to the pump when there is a sudden increase in vacuum pressure. There are several manufacturers of this equipment and prices are about the same as the SVRS systems. There are also some devices available that combine both types of systems.

Hopefully we've helped shed some light on this vitally important issue. As I mentioned earlier, the new law currently applies only to public pools. However, the very real danger of entrapment makes this an issue you can't afford to ignore. As a precaution; I recommend the use of more than one type of device or system and the devices should be tested periodically to insure proper operation.

Speed is another factor to consider when looking for a new pool pump. Swimming pool ownersoften the single speed pump at 3450 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) rating. These pumps are less efficient than the variable speed, because it is the largest amount of energy to use to accomplish their purpose. But they are more durable and often survive variable output pumps as they can maintain a constant flow of water over a long period. But this has a price, but as energy of a single-speed pumps to run longer at a floating rate that the options listedbelow.

Speed pumps regulated as a two-stage pump, allowing the user to control a bit 'more about energy consumption. At low speeds, running at 1750 RPM and 3450 RPM at high speed. You can save money on electricity bills from the pump at low speed in peak hours and at higher speeds, when the pump really needs to do its work. The two-speed feature provides an advantage for the bathrooms, for example, how they will operate high-speed jets and low speed for the restFiltration.

Two speed and variable speed pump can save you money
Many owners are two-speed pool pump off because it makes them save money on electricity bills. Use about $ 56.00 worth of energy to run the 3450 RPM speed and has a value of $ 7.00 of energy to run the speed of 1750 RPM. The savings are evident there.
